Designing Doc, our paper mascot

Doc — the folded-paper mascot who waves hello on the homepage and shows up (a little concerned) on our error pages — went through more design passes than almost anything else on the site.

The brief was simple to state and hard to hit: a character warm enough to make an empty state feel less bleak, restrained enough to never upstage the actual work of writing a book. Early versions were too cute, too mascot-y, too much like they belonged on a children's app rather than a serious writing tool.

Paper, not a person

What finally worked was leaning into the material: Doc reads as a folded sheet of paper, not a cartoon person. It waves when things go well, looks around when a page is missing, and otherwise stays out of your way — because the manuscript is the thing that matters, not the mascot.
